Last week, I was visiting a first year 1st grade teacher and heard this:
"...By the end of the lesson, we are going to be able to do this. Let’s read our I CAN statement. It says, "I can ask and answer questions about important details in a text." So after I read the story, you should be able to do this. You will be able to answer questions! That means you need to pay attention and listen. You will also be able to tell about characters, important events… The only way you can do this is if you’re listening and understanding what I'm reading."

The students were amazingly focused and answered each question at the end of the reading thoughtfully and critically.
