Setting clear objectives can make all the difference for your students. Do this explicitly, daily (multiple times a day!) and you will see how positively it focuses students and impacts their learning.
Think about this- if someone new walked into your classroom at any point in time and asked your students, "What are you learning?" how would they answer? Would they answer with a statement explaining what they're doing rather than what they're actually learning?
Set the expectation for your students. Make sure that they realize why the learning is important- why they must invest time and energy in it.
