Back in February, I posted a list of books to help teach children about protesting, activism, and social justice. I wrote, in part:
"When things get a little crazy (whether it be in my own life or in our world), I start thinking about how to help our children make sense of things. I start thinking of ways to help them know that they are safe, valued, and have a voice in our world.
I start small- in my home. I encourage my children to ask questions, I answer them as honestly as I can, and I turn to books. No matter how I'm feeling, I can always find a book that will make me feel safer, stronger, less alone, and inspired. I want that for my children as well.
Just this week, an incredible resource was released by NNSTOY (the National Network of State Teachers of the Year)- a Social Justice Book List with recommendations for all ages (Pre-K to adult). Let's fill our bookshelves with these stories and help our children understand our world and appreciate the beauty and diversity of all its people.
Because I am committed to getting these books into the hands of our children, the first 5 Kaimuki-McKinley-Roosevelt teachers to comment on this post with a title from this list and a short explanation of why they'd like it in their classroom library, will receive a brand new copy of their choice from me!

The books below are the ones that my son's second grade teacher chose from the book list for our family to gift to the class. Which book would you most like for your students? Comment below!
