I often think back to my first year of teaching. As exciting and fulfilling as it was, there were also (many) days of frustration, fear, and heartache. And yet, I was always inspired to not only continue, but to do more... and to do better. Many times, the inspiration came from my mentor, Laurie. She advocated for me, encouraged me, and shared not only her resources and expertise, but her own struggles and successes. She listened and she cared, and I knew that her door was always open.
This article, "How to Advocate for Teachers," made me think of Laurie and all of you- you are all advocating for your teachers by being mentors. You are ensuring that they are supported and having the time to reflect and grow. You are inspiring them by being leaders not only in your classrooms, but in our profession. Thank you for all you do. Mentors, please read this beautiful post by Sarah Brown Wessling, entitled, "Mindset for Mentoring."
Here's my favorite quote from her piece: "We all need mentors because they help us see a better version of ourselves than we can see without them. They offer for us both the ephemeral guidance to get us through today, while instilling in us a conception of what we can grow into." - Sarah Brown Wessling |
"Supporting new teachers with programs that make them better faster, represents one of the greatest opportunities for change in education today."
- Ellen Moir, New Teacher Center Chief Executive Officer 2017-2018
